Did you ever wish that you could create flash cards for your learners? Or engaging matching games to help them connect new terms?
With Quizlet, you can do those things, and much more!
Quizlet (https://quizlet.com) is a web-based application that allows you to create study materials to help reinforce learning for your students. Here’s how you can get started with Quizlet!
- Access Quizlet.com through your browser.
- Click Sign Up (it’s free!)
NOTE: Quizlet does have a paid option ($35.99/year). More info about that below!
- Complete “Sign Up” info and select your username. OR you can sign up with a Google or Facebook account. Click Sign Up.
- Quizlet does have a subscription version for educators (Costs $35.99/year) that allows access to tracking tools, use of images, and access to content developed by other educators. Or you can stick with the FREE version!
I’ve created my flash cards! Now what?
You can provide a link to your Quizlet item to your learners… or you can embed your Quizlet item in your Blackboard course!
Here’s how you can share a link with your learners.
Click the share button. Note: You’ll see a “hint” when you move your mouse pointer over any of these buttons!
Click the Copy link button.
This saves the URL to your clipboard, which will allow you to paste a link in Blackboard, in and email, or where ever you need to paste it.
…Or you can add it to Blackboard so that it’s interactive
If you would rather have the students stay in Blackboard, rather than going to the Quizlet website, you can embed the item into a content area in your Blackboard course.
To do this, you will click the More button for your Quizlet item. (see image below!)
Select embed from the menu that appears.
Select the desired study mode. Options include:
- Match (match the word with the term)
- Learn (provides a variety of study types — flash cards, fill in the blank, spelling, with study tips)
- Test (like learn, this is a mix of question options: fill in the blank, multiple choice, true/false)
- Flash Cards (just like old school flash cards… but online!)
- Spell (learners hear the word spoken and then type the word)
Then click Copy HTML. This copies the HTML code onto your clipboard, so that you can paste it into Blackboard.
In a content area in Blackboard, you will add or open an Item. For a new item, the default location will be the upper left corner of the item. In an existing item, click where you want the Quizlet to appear (like after an existing paragraph).
Click the Insert/Edit Embedded Media button from your Blackboard Item Toolbar.
In the Insert/Edit Embedded Media window, click the Source tab
Paste (CTRL + V) the Quizlet code into the source area.
Click the General tab; make sure that type is set to iframe.
Change Dimensions as needed. NOTE: If Constrain Properties is selected, you will change only width OR height; the other is adjusted automatically.
Click Insert or Update to continue.
In edit mode, your Blackboard item will display this as a yellow block. But that’s okay, because when you click the Submit button, you will see your object!
Check it out! And have some fun with it!
